Theodore "Ted" Carter, 88, of Richmond, passed away on April 20, 2026, at Ascension St. Vincent in Indianapolis. He was born on September 27, 1937, in Los Angeles, California, to Thomas and Ruth Ann Springmyer Carter.

Ted spent his formative years in Waukesha, Wisconsin, and moved to Richmond at the age of eighteen. He attended Earlham College and later earned his bachelor's degree in General Studies from Indiana University East.

He proudly served his country in the United States Army, completing six months of active duty and four and a half years in the Active Duty Reserves. He attained the rank of Sergeant (E-5) and was recognized as a rifle marksman, 8mm mortar sharpshooter, and expert with the 106 recoilless rifle.

Ted was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish and attended Holy Family Church.

He worked as a newspaper carrier for the Palladium-Item and The Indianapolis Star, was employed by GTE Phone Company, and later retired after 25 years with the Richmond Parks Department.

A devoted husband and father, Ted valued education and was known for his quick wit. He enjoyed playing Texas Hold'em, bridge, and euchre, and was an avid Green Bay Packers fan.

Ted is survived by his five children: Nancy (David) Vanover of Richmond; Jeff (Claudia) Carter of Cypress, Texas; Tim (Amy) Carter of Fishers; Linda (Chris) Farlow of Palm Coast, Florida; and Laura Parker of Richmond.

He is also survived by 19 grandchildren: Chris (Shanna) Carter, Amanda (Cole) Nunier, Kasey (Jake) Brammer, Josh Vanover, Kelly Carter, Jamie Carter, Chris DeBetta, Kate DeBetta, Neva Carter, Emma Carter, Sara Carter, Austin Bergfield, Alayna Bergfield, Matthew Farlow, Noah Farlow, Jacob Farlow, Alex Parker, Xavier Parker, and Paxton Parker; two great-grandchildren, Ava and Winston Nunier; along with his loving in-laws, nieces, and nephews.

Ted was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife of 58 years, Dolores Carter, who passed away in 2019.

A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 27, 2026, at Holy Family Church, with Rev. Sengole Gnanaraj officiating. Burial will follow at St. Andrew's Cemetery.
