S tephen D. Coates, 77, of Richmond, passed away at Reid Health after a brief illness. He was born on August 29, 1947, to Jesse and Edna Wells Coates and spent most of his life in Richmond.

A 1965 graduate of Richmond High School, Stephen went on to serve his country with distinction in the United States Air Force from August 1966 to September 1970. He was deployed to Korea, Vietnam, and Thailand, earning two Purple Hearts in recognition of his bravery.

Following his military service, Stephen built a 35-year career in the consumer finance field and later retired from Silgan Closures in 2009.

Stephen was deeply committed to honoring fellow veterans. He was a proud member of the Wayne County Honor Guard, the American Legion Post #65, and a life member and past commander of VFW Post 1108. Outside of his service to others, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and, most importantly, spending time with his family-especially his grandchildren

He is survived by his beloved wife, Laura Johnting Coates, whom he married in September 1995; his son, Stephen (Dezi) Coates; his daughter, Stephanie Coates; grandsons Jordan, Stephen Daulton, Clayton, Bryson, and Billy T.; and numerous nieces and nephews he cherished. Out of four brothers, Stephen was "the last of the Mohicans."

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Rodney, Larry, and Bill.

A funeral service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at Stegall-Berheide-Orr Funeral Home, with military honors provided by the Wayne County Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, Stephen requested that memorial contributions be made to the Wayne County Honor Guard or the VFW Kirk Little Post #1108, 213 S. 8th St., Richmond, IN 47374.
