Sandra Jean Chasteen, also known as Sandy, passed from this life and stepped into the arms of her Lord on February 16, 2024, at the age of 66 in Williamsburg, Indiana, after a courageous struggle with a long illness she was born on October 26, 1957, in Flint, Michigan, to Kenneth and Dorothy Martin. Sandy was preceded in death by her parents. Left to cherish her memory is her beloved husband of 45 years John Chasteen, her sons; John II (Sarah), Kenneth (Jessica), and Noah (Amelia), and her grandchildren; McKenzie, Jacob, Phoebe, Tate, Zeke, Leela, Austin and Cody. Her siblings; are Ed Martin (Louise), Kathy McDade (Will), Rick Martin (Bonnie), and Sue Miller (Jeff). And other family and friends.
Sandy was a genuine, friendly, and kind-hearted person who always strived to put God first in all aspects of her life. She was a devoted member of Hillcrest Baptist Church for over 40 years and served as the financial secretary for seven years. Sandy's faith was an integral part of her life, and she found great joy in serving the Lord. Sandy had a servant's heart helping and encouraging others whenever and wherever she could with a smile and kind words. As a volunteer at Reid Hospital, she received recognition for 500 hours of volunteer service. Sandy truly found happiness and fulfillment in the place God put her as a wife, mother, and grandmother, she loved being the homemaker and nurturer for her family.
Sandy grew up in rural Tuscola County Michigan on a farm. She enjoyed the typical things rural Michigan kids do; riding horses, and motorcycles and in the cold Michigan winters ice skating on the frozen river. She graduated from Vassar High School, Vassar MI. in high school her favorite class and activity to participate in was Theater Arts, while in high school and throughout her life Sandy was known for her sweet smile fun outgoing personality, and positive attitude. After HS Sandy studied elementary education at Midwestern Baptist College, Pontiac MI. where she was also a member of a female singing group called The Midwestern Belles traveling most weekends in Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan to churches ministering in song. On campus in February 1977 Sandy met John (her Johnny). That was the beginning of a relationship that led to a very happy and fulfilling marriage of 45 years.
Sandy's kind and loving spirit will be deeply missed by all who know her. Her legacy of faith in God, devotion, and love will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have been a part of her life.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, February 22, 2024, at Hillcrest Baptist Church, located at 3469 State Rd 38, Richmond, Indiana with Dr. Darrell Kepler and Rev. John Chasteen. Friends may call from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at Stegall-Berheide-Orr Funeral Home and one hour before services on Thursday at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hillcrest Baptist Church 3469 State Rd 38, or Cross Road Recovery Center, located at 6512 US Hwy 27, Richmond, IN 47374.
