Philip Spencer Jenkins (Phil), aged 97, died Tuesday, April 14th at his home in Richmond, IN.  He was born in 1929 in Richmond, but grew up on the campus of Hampton Institute (now University) in Virginia where his father taught.  His parents were F. Raymond and Cecelia Chandler Jenkins.

The family returned to Indiana in the early 1940s.  Young Philip was sure he would have to give up his beloved boating since "Indiana likely had little water".  He was wrong, of course, and spent a lifetime enjoying boating on everything from a tiny racing skiff built by brother Ray to a Chris Craft  Cabin Cruiser with many boats in between.  Favorite waterways were the Ohio River and Brookville Lake.

Phil went to Dennis Junior High, Westtown Boarding School near Philadelphia, and graduated from Earlham College in 1952.  In subsequent years, he worked in sales and service, starting as manager of Morton Center, formerly Morton High School.   Then followed owning and managing Red Rose Dining Room on North 8th Street, but surely his most enjoyable years were those in the mid-60s and 70s as a private pilot for several companies and individuals. Later in life Phil worked several years for Care-A-Van Transportation driving medical paitents. There were many opportunities for his caring nature to shine through, such as taking the homebound back the LONG way.

Phil was a lifelong member of West Richmond Friends Meeting but was a faithful attender of First Friends Meeting with his wife, Barbara.

He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Barbara Barker Jenkins, nieces Tori Jenkins, Carol Blackmore (Dave Warden), and Jessica Jenkins; nephews, Evan Jenkins (Meg) and Spencer Jenkins (Nancy); several great nieces and nephews, Melody, Ivy (Chris Topp), Collin, and Asher Blackmore, and one great-great niece, Maeve.  He is also survived by stepchildren Christopher Barker (Jennifer Conrad), Betsy Binnig (Bruce), Barry Barker; step grandchildren Sam (Heather), Lydia, and Tim Binnig and Annelise Taggart (Michael); step great grandchildren Emerson, Franklin, Makenna, and Bea.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Raymond, Jr. (Dickie), David, and brother-in-law Richard Berry (Janie).

The family's special thanks go to the Staff of AseraCare Hospice, and family friend David Cooper for such excellent care of Phil through the past year.

Memorial contributions may be made to Richmond Art Museum or the Wayne County Historical Museum.
