Obituary

Mary Maddox, age 93, of Richmond, Indiana, passed away in her sleep after a short illness on Tuesday, October 31, 2023, at Ascension/St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

The fourth of six children, Mary was born June 19, 1930, in Centerville to Ernesto Marzollini, an Italian immigrant railroad worker, and Angela Marzollini, a homemaker also from Italy. Shortly after her birth, the Marzollini family moved to Richmond where Mary would spend the rest of her life. In Richmond, she met and married the love of her life Robert (Bob) Maddox. The two were married on July 28, 1956, and remained so until Bob passed on July 17, 2000. Their marriage was blessed with three children: Mark, Gary, and Monica, all adopted through St. Elizabeth Coleman in Indianapolis. Family was everything to Mary, and for many years she was a homemaker dedicated to raising her very active family. If you gave her a chance, she would usually talk your ear off about her kids. She even learned to drive in 1970 to transport her busy kids to swim practices and other activities.

Mary and Bob were founding members of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Richmond, and her faith was of great importance to her. She was very active in her church and volunteered for numerous activities, the most recent of which was serving funeral dinners. In 1976, Mary returned to the workforce as a lunch lady at Richmond High School where she worked until 1998.  As one of Richmond's favorite lunch ladies, Mary loved her job and the opportunity to speak every day with students, faculty, administrators, and co-workers. As the years passed, many former students would encounter Mary around Richmond and tell her she still looked the same as when they were in school, and fortunately for Mary, they were right. After retirement, Mary remained full of energy and could usually be seen frequenting one of her favorite restaurants or retail stores around Richmond and going to church. Mary was the type who never met a stranger and made new friends on most outings.

She was preceded in death by all of her Marzollini siblings and her beloved husband Bob Maddox.

Survivors include her precious children Mark (Pam) Maddox of Westfield, Indiana, Gary Maddox of Indianapolis, Indiana, Monica (Dan) Drew of Naples, Florida; grandchildren Tyler (Erin) Maddox of Indianapolis, Indiana, Katlin (Matt) Humberger of Westfield, Indiana, Emma Drew of Boston, Massachusetts, and Sam Drew of Bloomington, Indiana; great-grandchildren Ross, Rowan and Easton of Westfield, Indiana and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday, November 10th at Stegall-Berheide-Orr funeral home. Her Catholic funeral mass "The Liturgy of Christian Burial" will be Saturday, November 11th at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Andrew's Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to: St. Elizabeth Coleman, 3388 Founders Road, Suite 200, Indianapolis, Indiana 46268; or Holy Family Catholic Church c/o Richmond Catholic Office, 240 S.
