Margaret Josephine
Stegen
May 17, 1930 — Oct 11, 2023
Margaret "Peggy" Josephine Stegen, age 93, Richmond, Indiana, passed from this life on October 11, 2023. She was born May 17, 1930, in Rockford, Illinois, to Charles and Lucile Hutter Fahy. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Patricia Hayes, and her husband Earl. Margaret married Earl at Sacred Heart Church in Oglesby, Illinois on June 14, 1952. She is survived by her daughter Sally (Mike) Ernstberger of Fishers, Indiana, daughter Susan (Dave) Gillard of Waleska, Georgia, and daughter Sharon (Dave) Leach of Von Ormy, Texas, and many grandchildren, step-grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Margaret moved from Rockford to Oglesby, Illinois in 1943. She graduated from LaSalle Peru Twp High School and attended LaSalle Peru Oglesby Junior College in LaSalle. After marrying Earl, they lived in Davenport, Iowa, where he worked for ALCOA as an electrical engineer. ALCOA moved them from Davenport to Cleveland, Ohio to Richmond, Indiana.
While her daughters were in school, Margaret was a Girl Scout leader. Her hobbies included reading, jigsaw puzzles, counting cross stitches, and knitting afghans. She and Earl were avid fans of Richmond Red Devil basketball and football, with season tickets long after the girls graduated from high school. They were members of St. Elizabeth Seton Parish, attending St. Mary's Catholic Church and then Holy Family Catholic Church. They enjoyed attending the "50 and over" mass and luncheons at St. Andrews. They helped at the Mission Food Pantry and delivered Meals on Wheels once a week for many years. Margaret also volunteered at the Richmond Welcome Center on National Road.
Margaret lived this past year at Wyndmoor of Castleton Assisted Living in Indianapolis. This location allowed more family time. She enjoyed the large gatherings during the holidays and the smaller weekly outings. Her family would like to thank the wonderful staff of Wyndmoor for their exceptional care during her stay there.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, October 24, from 10:30 to 12:30 at Stegall-Berheide-Orr funeral home in Richmond, Indiana. The Celebration of Life will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church at 1:00. Entombment will be in the Earlham Mausoleum at Earlham Cemetery.
