Obituary

Larry K. Hartley 82 of Richmond died at his home June 5, 2023. He was born October 7, 1940 in Richmond and lived here all his life.

When Larry was in his twenties, he went to work for AID Ambulance Service. After three weeks on the job the downtown explosion happened. He said it was a make it or break it that day. He said it was 36 hours of horror. Being the first unit on the scene was terrifying. He only talked about it two or three times and then would never mention it. The experience changed his life as it did many others.

After a while he became interested in funeral service and took the opportunity to attend mortuary school. He worked at Stegall-Berheide-Orr Funeral Home for a number of years and then returned to ambulance service.

After that Larry then worked with the Richmond Parks Department as the Park Police Officer. Following his job with the Parks Department Larry joined the Wayne County Sherriff's Department serving for 13 years until health issues forced him to leave. He returned to work at Stegall-Berheide-Orr Funeral Home. He also worked with his wife in the Bail Bond Business finally retiring 51/2 years ago.

Larry and Janie traveled extensively to see many parts of the world that were amazing and beautiful.

Larry proved you don't have to be a birth father to be a great Dad. Larry showed both his sons good work ethics and how to live a decent life. He will be missed by all of us, even his goofy jokes!

Larry is survived by his wife of 50 years Janie, two sons Scott (Hollie) Hill and Charles "Dink" (Melinda) Hill, six grandchildren Josten, Audrey, Abby, Andrew, Grace, and Madelyn Hill, and many cousins and co-workers. He is preceded in death by his mother Betty Rose Hartley Woods and step-father Donald Woods.

Larry's family would like to thank Megan and Becky from Aseracare Hospice, and Dr. Kalra for his many years of service.

A memorial service for Larry will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday June13, 2023 at Stegall-Berheide-Orr Funeral Home with Rev Martin Holman officiating.
