John Howard Koechlein, III (Howie in his younger years) left his earthly home on December 29, 2023, after a long illness that took so much of him from his family. Yet in the end, one thing remained – his contagious smile that brightened everyone's day.

John was born on July 18, 1955, in Elizabeth, New Jersey to John Howard Koechlein Jr. and Jane (Cooney) Koechlein. Along with his sister Terri (Koechlein) Batsel, the family settled in Richmond in 1958. Richmond remained John's home for the rest of his 68 years.

A graduate of Richmond High School in 1973, John received an associate degree from IU East. He was employed by the state of Indiana for over 30 years as a case worker and was a landlord for over 40. John was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church all his life and a 20-year board member of the Stamm Koechlein Family Foundation.

August 4, 2000, was a day of celebration for John when he married his loving wife Monica (Boardman). John claimed he wooed Monica with his little red Corvette, but it was actually his smile, hearty laugh, and the kindness he showed others that sealed the deal.

A second celebration arrived on January 30, 2008, when John became a father at the age of 52. Caleigh Lynn brought a fierce kind of love and pride to John's life. He always carried a picture of her in his wallet to show anyone he met.

John is preceded in death by his parents, John and Jane. He leaves behind his wife Monica, daughter Caleigh, sister Terri, 4 nephews, 3 nieces, and 2 great-nephews. He was loved by all he called family – those of relation and chosen friends.

A celebration of life service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 800 N. A Street in Richmond on Friday, January 5, 2024, at 5:30 pm. The family will be available to receive condolences before the service from 4:00-5:00. Everyone is welcome to come for the reception, the service, or both.
