James Dwain
Oda
Aug 29, 1931 — May 20, 2024
James (Jim) Dwain Oda, 92, of Richmond, IN passed peacefully from this life to the next on May 20, 2024. He was born the second of three sons to Lloyd J. and Bernice O. (Baker) Oda on August 29, 1931, in Richmond, IN.
As a young father, he made a living for his family at the Nehi Bottling Company, later joining his father as a skilled tradesman at Indiana Tool. He also worked at Nixon Tool, and finished his career at Ahaus Tool in 1996 where he was a jigbore operator, and did numerical control machine programming.
Jim had many interests in life, including family ancestry, antique pocketknives, watches, and vintage cars. He was a member and volunteer for the Model T Ford Club of America for several years.
He had many good qualities, and those who knew Jim best would be quick to describe him as friendly. He never met a stranger, and he had a way of putting others at ease.
Most importantly, though, he was loyal. He kept in touch with friends from his high school class and friends he and his wife (Barbara E.) made early in their marriage. He was a founding member, a faithful attender, and an usher at Hillcrest Baptist Church for nearly 60 years.
James Oda is survived by his daughter, Gloria Plascak (Tom, dec.), and his son, Michael (Dory), as well as a brother, Jan Oda (Linda) three grandchildren, Jennifer Shumaker, Leanne Wilkie (Scott), Eric Plascak (Lauren), and five great-grandchildren, Gavin Shumaker, Caden Plascak, Abigail Shumaker, Emily Plascak, and Adalind Wilkie. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his brother, Donald, and by his precious wife, Barbara Eileen Durr Oda.
It was Jim's wish that, in place of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Riley Hospital for Children, as he remained ever grateful for Riley's work in diagnosing, treating, and restoring health to him during his hospital stay due to Perthes Disease.
Services will be at 1:00 PM Wednesday, May 29, 2024, at Stegall-Berheide-Orr Funeral Home. The Oda family warmly invites friends and loved ones to call from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM Wednesday at the funeral home. Online condolences may be sent to the family via the guest book at stegallberheideorr.com
