Obituary

John E. Winnefeld (Jack) of Richmond, Indiana, passed away Wednesday, May 28th, 2025, at Reid Memorial Hospital as the result of several health issues. Born on January 18, 1937, in Hamilton, Ohio, to Ernest A. Winnefeld and Katherine A. Taylor Winnefeld.  Jack lived most of his younger years in Liberty, Indiana, where he attended Short High School and participated in sports, choir, and drama. He attended Indiana University and Earlham College.   He worked in his family-owned businesses, including The Liberty Hotel and Winnefeld Hardware Store. Married in 1959 to Melicent A. Rohe, they purchased a farm in Richmond, Indiana, in 1964, where he lived the rest of his life. Jack dedicated the majority of his professional life to his contracting business, Nu-Way Concrete, which his wife, Melicent, helped to run.

Jack was always an active golfer and traveler, and after retirement, he enjoyed cruises and adventures all over the world with Melicent, spending winter months in their Florida home.  He enjoyed maintaining and improving their property, mowing grass, hosting events for family and friends, and following the grandchildren's activities.

Jack was preceded in death by his father, mother, and sisters Jane Ellen Winnefeld Velton (survived by sons Ernie & Paul Velton, daughters Katherine Good & Jennifer Velton) and Joan Ernestine Winnefeld Harrison.

He is survived by his wife, son John Douglas Winnefeld (Pam Garman) of Cheyenne, Wyoming (granddaughter Meredith), daughter Cheryl A. Winnefeld of Madrid, Spain (grandsons Gino, Alexander, and Andy) and daughter Leanne Winnefeld Loffer (David Loffer) of Maineville, Ohio (grandchildren Nicholas, Zachary, Jane, Edie, and Mae).

We will all greatly miss Jack's contagious charisma and BIG presence; he will be lovingly remembered!  The family will receive friends at Stegall-Berheide-Orr Funeral Home on Tuesday, the 3rd of June, from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Mass will be held on Wednesday, the 4th, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, followed by the burial ceremony at St. Andrews Cemetery, both in Richmond, Indiana.
