Glenn Wilson McDermott, age 94, of Richmond, Indiana, passed peacefully on Sunday, May 5, 2024, at Arbor Trace Senior Living Facility in the comfort of family.  Born July 11, 1929, in Loogootee, Indiana to Leo and Mary McAtee McDermott, Glenn grew up in Washington, Indiana.  He was the youngest of eight children, having six sisters and one brother.  A child of the Great Depression, he grew up in desperate poverty, but never wanted for love as the youngest of his large Irish Catholic family.  Glenn attended Washington Catholic High School, where he formed friendships that would carry him through his lifetime.  During his high school years, he played basketball and worked at Donaldson's Toggery, becoming an honorary member of the Donaldson family.  Following high school, Glenn attended Butler University for 1.5 years until he was drafted into military service during the Korean War.  Serving in the United States Air Force from July of 1951 to July of 1955, Glenn spent most of his time overseas in Okinawa.

When he returned to Washington, IN, he briefly attended Vincennes University where he met and fell in love with Ruth McDermott.  On February 4, 1956, Glenn and Ruth began what would become a marriage of love and devotion that would endure for sixty-eight years. Glenn and Ruth soon moved to Terre Haute, IN, where Glenn completed his bachelor's degree at Indiana State University.  He then accepted a position with Richmond Community Schools, where he established the first Speech and Hearing program for students at RCS.  In 1965, Glenn and Ruth moved their young family to Bloomington, IN, as Glenn worked toward and completed his master's degree in Speech and Hearing Pathology in 1966.  Returning to Richmond that same year, Glenn accepted a position with Centerville-Abington Schools, where he established the first Speech and Hearing program for students in the Centerville-Abington School District.  For over thirty years, Glenn served the students of Centerville-Abington Schools, while also serving patients in his own private practice, at Green Acres, and at several nursing homes in Richmond.  Being a Speech and Hearing Pathologist was a source of enormous pride for Glenn.

In retirement, Glenn and Ruth travelled, visited cherished friends, and established a new home base in a log home on Henderson Ridge near Nashville, Indiana.  In 2005, Glenn suffered a serious stroke, leaving him partially paralyzed for the remainder of his life.  When the burden of his care, and Ruth's own illness made it unfeasible to stay on Henderson Ridge, they returned to Richmond in 2010.  From 2010 until October of 2023, Glenn was lovingly cared for at home.  In 2017, as Ruth's struggle against dementia increasingly failed, she was moved to a care facility.  In October of 2023, Glenn moved to Arbor Trace, both to receive the care that he needed, but most especially to be with his beloved wife, Ruth.  Reunited again, they had three months filled with love together until Ruth's passing on January 6, 2024.  On Sunday, May 5th, they were reunited again.

During his life, Glenn was active in the Richmond Jaycees, the Elks Lodge #649, Psi Iota Xi, Indiana Speech and Hearing Association, Governor Bowen's Advisory Board on Speech and Hearing, and he was a proud recipient of the Sagamore of the Wabash Award in 1997.  He was an avid sports fan, particularly his beloved Indiana University basketball, the Indianapolis Colts, and the Cincinnati Reds.  He especially enjoyed watching his grandson, Sean McDermott, play basketball for Butler University, and following the pitching career of grandson, Chayce McDermott.

Throughout his life, Glenn's highest priorities were his faith, his family, and his profession.  He was a member of St. Mary's Parish in Richmond, Indiana.  In his younger years he served on the Parish Council and taught CCD.  He taught his children by example the importance of faith.  He rarely spoke of the early challenges of his life, but it was Ruth who shared that it was Glenn's faith and his love for his mother that sustained him through tremendous hardship and poverty he experienced as a boy.  It was this same deep and abiding faith that comforted him and gave him strength when his beloved son Patrick died in 1980.  Throughout his life, Glenn's Roman Catholic faith was a source of comfort and hope, inspired by his own mother's abiding faith.

Glenn is survived by his four children, Angie Parker, Michael McDermott, Julie Marcum (Tim), and Kelley McDermott (Jenny). Glenn was also blessed with seven grandchildren, Kirsten Phillips (Scott), Justin Parker (Leslie), Ryan Parker (Danielle), Alexis Maitlen (Jeff), Kylie Thomas (Josh), Sean McDermott (Kennedy), and Chayce McDermott (Lauren). Glenn's family also includes thirteen great-grandchildren, with a new great-grandson soon to arrive. He is predeceased by his parents Leo and Mary McAtee McDermott, his brother Joseph, sisters Regina, Esther, Eva Mae, Mary, Catherine, and Elizabeth, son Patrick Kevin McDermott, and son-in-law Ted Anthony Parker.

Funeral services for Glenn will be at 1:00 p.m., Friday, May 10, 2024, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Richmond, IN.  Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Stegall-Berheide-Orr Funeral Home.  In remembrance of Glenn's life, his family asks that any memorial tributes be made in the form of charitable donations to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
