Gertrude A. Mays age 93 of Richmond died Saturday, November 25, 2023, at Reid Health after an extended illness. She was born May 9, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois to Charles Francis and Gertrude Fettig McCarthy and lived in Richmond since 1961. She worked as a beautician and was the former President of the Cosmetology Association. She received an Associate's Degree from Indiana Business College in Anderson.

Gertrude was a member of the Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish and Catholic Women United. She was also a member of the Sertoma Club and Red Hats. She was a self-proclaimed reading teacher.

Survivors include three children James L. (Lucy) Mays of Fairfax, Virginia, Stephen Mays of Oxford, Ohio, Suanna M. (Mike) Ponder of Richmond, and Joseph Mays of Louisville, Kentucky, ten grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Her husband James died May 9, 2014. She is also preceded in death by her son Mark D. Mays, a grandson Kenton Mays, a daughter-in-law Peggy Mays, her parents, two sisters Agnes Eileen McCarthy, and Mildred Brunk, and two brothers Charles and Tom McCarty.

Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, December 2, 2023, at St. Mary's Church with Rev Nick Pagano officiating. The burial for Gertrude will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends may call from 10:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. Saturday, December 2, 2023, at Stegall-Berheide-Orr Funeral Home.
