Obituary

Charlene V. George 84 of Richmond died February 25, 2024, at her son's home surrounded by her loved ones. She was born August 6, 1939, in Richmond to Richard and Esther Druley Lunsford and lived here all her life.

Charlene was a great person!  She was the nicest in every way.  She did not let her illness direct how she lived over the last seven months of her life. She often stated that she didn't want to "just exist". She remained independent until two weeks before her passing.

She was the absolutely best at making deviled eggs, chocolate and peanut butter fudge, no-bake oatmeal cookies, and meatloaf! Everybody looked forward to her treats at family gatherings. She loved her family and spending as much time as she could with them. She would often travel to see her grandchildren, even as far as Japan.

Charlene enjoyed her casino visits and bingo. She was an excellent mushroom hunter, and she could spot morels a mile way away. She would always tell us to be especially quiet when we hunted with her. We seemed to "scare the mushrooms back down". We all ate them as fast as she could prepare them.

Charlene was committed to her career. She started her very first job at Western-Cullen Hayes at the age of 17 and she remained there for an unbelievable 65 years! She would very often say that she "gets to go work" instead of "having to go to work".  While at Western-Cullen Hayes, her co-workers became "family".  Charlene retired in 2022.

She was a wonderful soul that will be missed terribly forever by her friends and family.

Survivors include her son Richard (Maria) George, three step-children Bruce, Tim, and Teresa George, her grandchildren Richard and Joel George, Jennifer Garnett, Elizabeth McGuire, and Kimberly Rust, and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her daughter Darlene Myers, a grandson Joshua George, her parents, two sisters Shirley Lunsford and Jeanette Charles, and her Granny Minnie Druley.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 P.M. Sunday March 3, 2024, at Stegall-Berheide-Orr Funeral Home. The burial for Charlene will be in Boston Cemetery. Friends may call from 12:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. Sunday, March 3rd at the funeral home. Online condolences may be sent to the family via the guest book at stegallberheideorr.com.
