Erwin E. Criss

Erwin E. Criss from Richmond and Indialantic, Florida (known to his friends as “Criss”) passed away peacefully at Sterling House of Richmond on January 27, 2013 at the age of 98. He was born September 21, 1914 in Champaign, Illinois to Josephine Sido and Edward Criss. He graduated from Corydon, Indiana High School in 1932. After graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1938 from Purdue with a degree in Engineering, he moved to Richmond and began working for Hoff Sheet Metal from 1938-53. He then worked for Alcoa from 1953 until retirement in 1979. He married Janet Kahle April 19, 1941 and they celebrated their 50th anniversary while in Florida in 1991. An Army veteran of World War Two, he served in Seattle Washington, and Manila, Philippines; he retired as a Lt. Colonel from the active Army Reserve in 1974. He was preceded in death by his wife, Janet in November 1993, two sisters Josephine Davis Keller in 1994, and Phyllis Nash in 1997. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, former member of the Elks Country Club, and an avid golfer later in life. During his golfing “career” he scored four holes-in-one. He is survived by his daughters Susan Norris (husband John) of Winchester, Nancy Porter (husband Rick) of Richmond, and son Gary Criss of Richmond, three granddaughters Kim Cruea of Indianapolis, Nancy Skaggs of Westerville, Ohio, Christi Nash of Greenwood, one grandson Capt. Greg Harrison of Potomac Falls Virginia, one great grandson Tommy Roberts of Westerville, Ohio, and a special friend Faye Skowronski of Satellite Beach, Florida. Liturgy of Christian Burial will be 10:00 A.M. Saturday February 2, 2013 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery with military rites. There will be no public calling. Memorial contributions may be given to St. Mary’s Church c/o Richmond Catholic Office 240 South 6th Street Richmond, Indiana 47374. Stegall-Berheide-Orr Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
